There is a great cartoon on the notice board at my work place. It says publish or perish ! This is certainly true in my current field of work.Publishing on a high ranking journal or a highly reputed journal is important as it builds your profile among your peers. [There's also an index which ranks you on how well you're doing in publishing papers as well (check out H index), a bit like the research gate impact factor for individual profiles].Sometime ago I decided to make a table up with the Impact factors and what not scales which are used to gauge ranking of journals for my self.
